The Façade pARTnership Grant Program Returns - Bringing Creative Collaborations to the Atlanta Beltline

Established in 2019, The Façade pARTnership Grant Program facilitates mutually beneficial relationships between Beltline business owners and local artists, transforming storefronts on the Beltline corridor...

Calling all businesses and artists: the next cycle of the Façade pARTnership Grant Program is back and will begin accepting applications later this month.  

Originally launched in 2019, this initiative supports the beautification and enhancement of commercial spaces along the Beltline by pairing business owners with talented local artists and makers. The program offers up to $50,000 in grant funding to help businesses grow through façade capital improvements – while also giving artists a platform to showcase their work and contribute to the vibrancy of Atlanta’s commercial corridors.

Applications for the 2025 – 2026 Façade pARTnership Grant cycle will open June 20 through July 28. Whether you’re a business owner looking to refresh your storefront or an artist eager to make your mark, this is your chance to get involved.

6-Class AI-Enhanced Business Development Series: May-July 2025

OVERVIEW

This framework outlines The Grove Park Foundation's next six classes designed to build strong business foundations through the Growth Wheel Platform and AI tools. Each class focuses on developing core business competencies with AI prompt engineering to expedite business structure development and documentation. The primary focus is establishing Grove Park Ready businesses with strong foundations that can later pursue World Cup opportunities.

This program is partnership with Fifth Third Bank and the Northwest Business Association.

YOU MUST REGISTER ON THE Growth Wheel Platform TO BE INCLUDED IN THE CLASSES

GROVE PARK READY CERTIFICATION

Certification Requirements:

• Completion of all six classes

• Development of required business documentation

• Implementation of at least three AI tools in business operations

• Demonstration of business model viability

2025 City of Atlanta Summer Youth Employment Program: FOR BUSINESS OWNERS

Our program serves as a conduit between Atlanta's talented youth between the ages of 14 – 24 years old and local businesses, offering valuable employment opportunities and fostering professional growth. Unlike previous years, this year's program operates on a hire-as-usual basis, with employers directly hiring youth for summer positions. We will review request of employers seeking assistance with sponsorship of hiring youth. However, funding is limited, and sponsorships are not a guarantee.

Running from June 9th to July 17th, the program aligns with your typical summer hiring timeline, providing a pool of motivated and enthusiastic young individuals eager to contribute to your organization. Whether you're looking to fill internships, entry-level positions, or specialized roles, the Summer Youth Employment Program offers a diverse talent pool ready to meet your needs.

Donate a Student Prize for Georgia Milestone Testing

As we approach the spring semester, schools across our community are preparing students for the Georgia Milestones assessments in April—an important opportunity for students to demonstrate academic growth and progress.

I recently met with leaders at KIPP Woodson Park Academy and John Lewis Invictus Academy, and both schools are working hard to create a positive and motivating environment for their students leading up to these tests. One way they hope to do this is through incentives—prizes and giveaways that celebrate effort, focus, and achievement.

We are reaching out to local businesses like yours to ask for your support. Would your business be willing to donate gift cards, products, experiences, or services that could be used as student prizes? Examples include:

Gift cards to local restaurants or retailers
Tickets to Six Flags or other local attractions
Branded merchandise or services from your business

Your support would not only motivate students but also show them that their community is behind them. It's a small gesture that can make a big impact.

Atlanta Housing and Partners Break Ground on $63.6M Bowen Homes Redevelopment

Ceremony launches Bowen transformation with 151 new units

ATLANTA – Atlanta Housing (AH) and its public-private partners broke ground today on Bowen Homes Phase I, a $63.6 million redevelopment project set to revitalize the historic Bowen Homes site and the Carey Park neighborhood. Leaders from Invest Atlanta, the City of Atlanta, the Georgia Department of Community Affairs, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Centene Foundation, Peach State Health Plan and development partners McCormack Baron Salazar and The Benoit Group joined in celebrating this milestone, marking the beginning of a transformative, multi-year effort. The redevelopment of Bowen Homes will create a vibrant, mixed-income community and serve as a national model for equitable, community-focused revitalization.

Located in the northwest area of Atlanta, Bowen Phase 1 will add 151 units to Atlanta’s housing inventory, with most of them reserved as affordable.

“Bowen is poised to be a national model for neighborhood transformation, an anchor for progress in Carey Park, and a testament to the power of community-focused redevelopment,” said Atlanta Housing President and CEO Terri Lee. “This project is about more than housing; it’s about empowering people, fostering economic self-sufficiency, and ensuring that families have the support they need to succeed for generations to come.”

This transformational investment is critical as development expands westward from Atlanta’s urban core. Supported in part by a $40 million HUD Choice Neighborhoods Implementation grant and backed by over $523 million in public and private commitments, the project is expected to catalyze broader revitalization along the Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway and James Jackson Parkway corridors.

March Small Business Grants

MARCH SMALL BUSINESS GRANTS
Small-business owners are worried that a variety of factors could hurt their business growth prospects in the months to come.

About 53% of business owners surveyed by the Small Business Majority were worried about tariffs negatively impacting their business, while 77% were worried about tariffs impacting the American economy more broadly. The survey also found that over the past three months, business revenues decreased for 42% of entrepreneurs and stayed the same for 34% over that period. Just 24% of small businesses reported revenue increases.

A separate survey from small-business networking platform Alignable found that 30% of small businesses anticipate revenue losses due to tariffs proposed by the Trump administration. Just 18% believe it will boost their sales.

"Small businesses are already navigating a financial minefield — rising costs, inflation, and economic uncertainty," Alignable CEO Eric Groves said in a press release. "Now, the threat of new tariffs could be the breaking point for many.”

For small businesses looking to bolster their financial state or take their business to the next level amid the uncertainty, we have assembled a list of small-business grants that are open for applications.

Honeycomb Credit offers ‘breakthrough’ grant

Small-business investment platform Honeycomb Credit is offering a $10,000 breakthrough grant to support small businesses achieving their next big step, whether it’s a new location, launching a food truck or franchising. Applicants must own a business to qualify. Applications are due by 11:59 p.m. on April 2, 2025, with the grant winner to be announced by April 11, 2025.

Cognac brand Remy Martin offers $20,000 grants

Creatives and entrepreneurs contributing to their local culture in a few select cities are eligible for the Remy Martin This is My City Microgrant. The grant is for entrepreneurs in Chicago, Detroit, New York City and Atlanta, with a winner in each city getting the money and one-on-one mentorship from an established figure in their field. The grant coincides with the release of limited edition bottles designed to mimic the culture and flavor of each city.

This is My City grant honorees will be announced in June 2025. Applicants can submit their entries on RemyMartin.com/en-us/This-Is-My-City Applications close April 11, 2025.

$5,000 Faire Small-Business Grant

Independent retail stores or those who soon plan to open a retail store can win a $5,000 grant in Faire merchandise to help stock their store. Applicants need to provide a few details and submit a short video on how the grant money would help. Applications are due March 31, 2025, and winners are announced April 30, 2025.

$10,000 DoorDash disaster relief grants

Restaurants across the country hit hard by a natural disaster can apply for $10,000 grants, courtesy of DoorDash.

The Restaurant Disaster Relief Fund, a partnership between DoorDash, financing platform Hello Alice and the Global Entrepreneurship network, is open to restaurants in state or federally declared natural-disaster areas. The grant windows operate on a rolling bases, with four a year.

To be eligible, restaurants must have a brick-and-mortar location, fewer than 50 employees per location, be open at least six months and have less than $3 million in revenue per location.

The first window for applications is open until March 3. Winners will be announced in April.

Additional grants business owners can apply for throughout 2025 include:

Verizon's Small Business Digital Ready program: Business owners who sign up for the free Verizon Small Business Digital Ready online community will be eligible to apply for grants throughout the year. The company provides up to $1 million in grant funding a year.
The National Science Foundation: The National Science Foundation’s America’s Seed Fund provides millions in grant funding to small businesses and startups with big ideas. The grant program gives out roughly $200 million per year to eligible businesses.
The National Association for the Self-Employed: The National Association for the Self-Employed has a $4,000 growth grant that it offers on a rolling basis. Only members are eligible.

Main Street Entrepreneurs Seed Fund Opens Applications for Fifth Cohort Main Street

Georgia State University’s Entrepreneurship & Innovation Institute (ENI) has announced the opening of applications for the fifth annual Main Street Entrepreneurs Seed Fund, a six-month business accelerator designed to support resource-constrained entrepreneurs. This year, the program is bolstered by $350,000 in grant funding, including $300,000 from Truist and $50,000 from Bank of America.

The Main Street Entrepreneurs Seed Fund has earned national recognition for its impact, receiving accolades such as the Specialty Award for Most Innovative Program from the International Business Innovation Association (InBIA), the Excellence in Student Engagement in Entrepreneurship Award from the Deshpande Symposium for Innovation and Entrepreneurship in Higher Education, and the Award for Excellence in Specialty Entrepreneurship Education from the Global Consortium of Entrepreneurship Centers (GCEC).

Since its launch in 2019, Main Street has empowered 86 founders representing 61 companies and has awarded more than $600,000 in non-dilutive funding. Participants benefit from seed funding, targeted workshops, mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs, networking opportunities, and intensive coaching from subject matter experts and the entrepreneur-in-residence.

Each cohort concludes with a signature Demo Day event featuring a business showcase, live radio broadcast, pitch competition and networking reception.

The application period for Cohort 5 is now open and runs through Feb. 28. Interested entrepreneurs can attend information sessions to learn more about the program and its opportunities.

“Main Street represents the heart of Georgia State’s commitment to fostering inclusive entrepreneurship,” said Dave Forquer, former interim director of ENI. “By providing crucial resources and mentorship, we help entrepreneurs bridge achievement gaps and create sustainable ventures that drive innovation and economic growth. This year’s generous funding from Truist and Bank of America strengthens our ability to empower founders and build a more equitable entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

“What sets Main Street apart is its emphasis on community and resilience," said Joyelle “Joy” Harris, executive officer for entrepreneurship for Georgia State and director of ENI. "From seed funding to mentorship, we equip founders with the tools to overcome barriers and scale their ventures. The program’s impact is a testament to the talent and determination of our participants, as well as the strength of Georgia State’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.”

Main Street alums continue to praise the program for its transformative effect.

“Main Street changed my life and the trajectory of the business” said Nigel Stewart, founder and CEO of Mission2Motivate and a Cohort 4 alum. "Main street provided us with mentorship from industry leaders whom I am still connected with, invaluable workshops that helped me hone my business strategy and exposed me to a thriving tech ecosystem in Atlanta. What truly made the difference, though, was the belief they had in me that no one else did. They saw potential in me and my business that I did not see in myself. Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport (ATL) today announced the launch of a new Concessions Small Business Program. Approved by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) on Oct. 16, 2024, this innovative program is designed to educate, empower, and create opportunities for small businesses to operate at the Airport. The program consists of two distinct components to ensure clear progression and opportunities: Gateway to Growth – the ATL Airport Concessions Small Business Development Academy and SOAR ATL – The concessions small business program that will support entrepreneurs in operating a business at ATL.

“Today, we take another critical step forward in ensuring that small businesses are positioned to thrive and succeed as an integral part of ATL’s ecosystem,” said Airport Interim General Manager Jan Lennon. “The ATL Airport Concessions Small Business Program represents our commitment to empowering entrepreneurs and leveling the playing field. Programs like Gateway to Growth and SOAR ATL were built with a clear purpose to equip small business owners with the knowledge, tools, and resources they need to navigate the unique demands of operating in the world’s busiest airport.”

“As a city, we’ve always known that small businesses are the backbone of our economy and play a key part in building the vibrant, influential, and inclusive communities that make up Atlanta,” said City of Atlanta Chief Operating Officer LaChandra Burks. “This program reflects the City of Atlanta’s and Mayor Andre Dickens’ commitment to creating a city of opportunity for all – one where every small business has access to the resources they need to thrive.”

Gateway to Growth

Gateway to Growth is an 11-week comprehensive education program that equips small businesses with the knowledge to navigate Airport operations, respond to bids, and build operational readiness. The program is a strategic initiative by the City of Atlanta's Department of Aviation aimed at providing experienced small business owners with the tools and knowledge needed to thrive in the dynamic environment of ATL. The inaugural cohort will include up to 25 participants and run from March 3 – May 1, 2025. The academy’s graduation ceremony is scheduled for National Small Business Week, May 4-10, 2025.

SOAR ATL

SOAR ATL is a Concessions small business program designed to support entrepreneurs operating a business at ATL. This program provides guidance and resources to help businesses navigate the Airport concessions environment.

As part of the process, the City of Atlanta’s Department of Procurement manages solicitations on behalf of the Department of Aviation’s Concessions Program. The Northwest Business Association is an advocacy nonprofit organization governed by a volunteer board of directors consisting of business and property owners within the boundaries of the organization.

Volunteer board members donate their time, expertise and leverage relationships on behalf of the entire community.

Board members serve two year terms and receive no compensation. Average time commitment is between 5-10 hours per month depending on meetings, events and initiatives.

The Northwest Business Association is seeking a contract graphic artist and layout designer to help create the 2025 Community Resource Guide.

This is a paid, contract position from January 2025-July 2025.
Budget is $2500.

NWBA is seeking a skilled graphic artist with at last 3 years experience in illustration, graphics and print layout to create:

Original graphic art depicting the history, character and today's view of the NPU-J neighborhoods. This will be used for printed cover art and scaled/resized to be used on the digital version, website, social media, printed posters and email newsletters to promote the guide.
Print and digital formatting experience a must.
Layout of NWBA member directory with logos and contact info.

First printing deadline is February 18, 2025.

Fifth Third Bank Launches Small Business Catalyst Fund

Fifth Third has launched the “Small Business Catalyst fund” in partnership with Community Reinvestment Fund (CRF) to support and build equitable small business ecosystems and provide access to grants and capital. The catalyst fund offers grants, micro loans, and small business loans to small businesses across our footprint, including here in Georgia. We believe the fund will help catalyze growth for small and micro businesses for whom traditional lending isn’t an option.

What’s unique about the fund is that it provides technical assistance in addition to capital, and it’s structured to help small businesses at various stages of maturity. The fund also represents an extension of our focus on spurring growth in disinvested neighborhoods across our footprint, including Grove Park, through our neighborhood investment program.

Applications are being accepted from October 31 – December 13, 2024.

Grants in the amount of $5,300 are available to businesses in the Grove Park neighborhood (zip codes 30314, 30318)

Working capital loans are available starting as low as $5K and up to $750K (must be in the Fifth Third footprint)

NWBA has been awarded a $59,000 commercial district grant from the Atlanta BeltLine to create a community resource guide to promote NWBA member to the NPU-J neighborhoods.

We are thrilled to announce the hiring of Malorie Stewart as our Community Outreach and Social Media Manager as a first step in creating more connectivity and promotional opportunities for our members.

Over the next 12 months, NWBA will be working to build membership, collect information and engage the business and residential communities of NPU-J.

Promote our existing NWBA members on social media.
Community engagement at the Small Business Day of Impact on Tuesday, October 1st, the Grove Park Foundation 5K and Harambee Festival on Saturday, October 5th.
Get out and meet business owners on a weekly basis!
Attendance at NPU-J neighborhood association meetings.
Meet with neighborhood association leaders to gather history and ways business owners and residents can engage. Neighborhood association input form.
Enlist a local graphic artist to create the cover and image of the resource guide.
Work with the City of Atlanta to compile a quick list of who to contact for issues related to business and residents.
Grow our membership from 29 members to at least 50 for the first printing in January 2025.

While QuickBooks is PCI Compliant, other applications on your local computer/network can compromise the security of your environment. Use of QuickBooks Payments services ensures parts of the transaction processing chain are compliant, but does not guarantee compliance by the Payment Card Industry.

What is PCI Compliance?

PCI Compliance is a global card brand requirement with the ultimate goal to help protect your customers and your business from a cardholder data breach. While Intuit products are PCI Compliant, you also need to validate your business is handling payment card data safely. As a part of the Intuit Terms of Service, it is required that your business is PCI Compliant.

What if I am already PCI Compliant?

No action is required, but remember to renew your certificate of compliance each year.

How can I protect my business outside of QuickBooks?

Start:ME is a free 3-month training program for local small business owners, connecting entrepreneurs to business know-how, supportive mentorship, and grant capital. To date, Start:ME has served over 450 Atlanta area businesses offering everything from haircare to tree care, eyeglasses to accounting, furniture to food. Start:ME is delivered by Emory’s Goizueta Business School in partnership with local nonprofit partners, including FCS & Purpose Built Schools Atlanta (Start:ME Southside), East Lake Foundation (Start:ME East Lake), and Friends of Refugees (Start:ME Clarkston). The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Affairs (OCA) is launching our Moving Atlanta Forward (MAF) Bond 2.0 Public Art Projects, by commissioning 24 Utility Box Murals and 24 Mural Bike Racks. The OCA seeks proposals from Metro Atlanta visual artists to paint metal bike racks and utility boxes.

Previous public art experience is not required. Artists will receive $2000 per project; this budget is all-inclusive.

Atlanta City Government Proposes Historic $2.75 Billion Budget

The City of Atlanta is proud to announce its proposed budget for the fiscal year 2025, set at a remarkable $2.75 billion. The budget allocates $853.8 million for the General Fund, $1.5 billion for Enterprise Funds and $352.5 million for Other Funds, demonstrating a comprehensive approach to fiscal planning. This budget reflects a strategic approach to financial management, aimed at addressing the evolving economic landscape while prioritizing critical investments for the city's growth and development.

"This budget reflects our shared vision of Atlanta as a City of Opportunity for All,” said Atlanta Mayor Andre Dickens. “As Atlanta's influence expands on the global stage, it's imperative that we prioritize critical investments in our infrastructure, residents, and employees.”

In navigating the post-pandemic economic dynamics, the budget takes into account recent analyses and projections, including a projected slight contraction in inflation-adjusted GDP and expectations of an average inflation rate of around 2.5% per year.

"This budget is a blueprint for Atlanta’s future, balancing sound fiscal management with strategic investments that are responsive to current economic conditions and promote long-term growth and resilience," said City of Atlanta Chief Financial Officer Mohamed Balla.

Key highlights of the proposed budget include:

Investments in Human Capital: Recognizing the importance of retaining talent, the budget includes a $24.3 million investment in employee compensation, benefits, and professional development, ensuring a resourceful workforce for the city's future.
Commitment to Public Safety: Mayor Dickens' commitment to public safety is evident in significant investments of $29.8 million, including funding for equipment, technology upgrades, and security measures.
Affordable Housing Initiatives: The budget commits $17 million to the Affordable Housing Trust Fund, supporting initiatives to provide safe and quality housing for residents and promoting inclusive growth across the city.
Infrastructure Development: With a focus on infrastructure, the budget allocates $30 million for capital improvements, including the construction of two new fire stations and addressing long-standing maintenance needs.

Continued Investment in Youth: We are continuing investments to pave the way for a brighter future for Atlanta’s future leaders. These investments include: 3 million in Year of the Youth Investments, $1.8 million for the operations of our At-Promise Youth Centers and $2 million for Summer Youth Program and $1.9 million for the Mayor’s Youth Ball.

Massive Bankhead proposal on BeltLine takes step forward

Project by Star Metals District developer calls for 1,600 residences, retail spaces, offices

Two years after paying $31 million for the site, an active intown developer has taken another step toward starting a mixed-use project that could bring sweeping changes to Bankhead and the BeltLine’s Westside Trail.

The Allen Morris Company submitted Development of Regional Impact paperwork to the Georgia Department of Community Affairs on Sunday that outlines the scope and other details of what could take shape at 1060 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway, a 15.5-acre site that’s home to warehouses and open industrial land today.

Allen Morris—the Florida-based developer behind the Star Metals District on Howell Mill Road and other intown projects—is aiming to build a new village where the parkway meets the BeltLine. According to the DRI filing, the project would entail 1,600 multifamily units, 575,000 square feet of office space, and 125,000 square feet of retail across the linear site, which fronts the Westside Trail for the equivalent of several blocks.

Developers file DRI submissions with the state when projects could be large enough to impact infrastructure on a regional scale. Allen Morris also submitted the 1060 Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway proposal for mixed-use rezoning with the City of Atlanta last month.

The overall project completion date is listed as 2031 on the DRI filing. But some public-accessible aspects of it could be ready sooner.

Spencer Morris, the development firm’s president, tells Urbanize Atlanta the project’s retail phase is expected to start construction in the third quarter of 2025. (BeltLine officials say construction on the Westside Trail’s adjacent Segment 4—the last unfinished section of that trail—is slated to be finished in summer 2025.)

Morris said project renderings, branding, and other details will be released in coming months.

We’re speculating here, but a project listed as being under active land refinancing with Patterson Real Estate Advisory Group could lend a preview of the Bankhead project’s aesthetics. The lone available rending appears to include the address “1060 DLH” and the name “Ironside” on what’s also a 15.5-acre site on the city’s Westside.

Allen Morris’ plans call for direct access to the BeltLine next door and a new parking garage for visitors and employees arriving by car.

Much of the property is vacant today, with the exception of a nonprofit facility and community organization called Village Skatepark ATL. According to the skatepark’s website, it’s conducting a 2024 fundraiser to help secure a new building and permanent location.

This site is just east of the Maddox Park greenspace, MARTA’s Bankhead station, and Microsoft’s ballyhooed but postponed 90-acre Westside campus development.

Allen Morris will be the site’s lead developer, but the former owner, Tenth Street Ventures, will stay involved as a partner, officials announced in May 2022 when the land sold. The redevelopment was described at the time as becoming a neighborhood destination that activates the BeltLine and serves the community.

Elsewhere in Atlanta, Allen Morris is currently building a major new residential facet to its $500-million Star Metals District and recently opened a multifamily project called Bryn House in North Druid Hills.

New Marta Infill Station Coming to Joseph E. Boone between Ashby and Bankhead

Mayor Andre Dickens revealed Thursday the locations of the planned new MARTA rail stations he announced last month during his State of the City address.

But how to pay for them is still to be determined.

Dickens said at his State of the City where one MARTA rail station would be built — at the redevelopment of Murphy Crossing in southwest Atlanta. The new station would be the first to link MARTA heavy rail to the Atlanta Beltline.

In an administrative order, Dickens unveiled where the three other planned infill stations — those built between existing stations — would be located.

They sites are at Krog Street/Hulsey Yard between King Memorial and Inman Park/Reynoldstown, Joseph E. Boone between Ashby and Bankhead, and Armour Yards in Buckhead, between Arts Center and Lindbergh.

The order also includes plans for a bus rapid transit (BRT) corridor to connect the redeveloped Bowen Homes community with Ponce City Market.

The mayor also wants the city, Atlanta Beltline Inc. and MARTA to work together to “develop a plan for mobility and transit options on the entirety of the Beltline.”

Dickens also directs the city and ABI to collaborate with MARTA to develop the design and financing plan for the new stations and BRT corridor.

This includes finding funding sources such as local, state and private revenue “to support the planning process and to identify potential public/private partnership opportunities for any and all MARTA stations,” the order says.

The importance of aligning public investment with transportation equity is crucial in enhancing the quality of life for all Atlantans as the city continues to grow, the mayor said. The order includes the directive for the city, ABI and MARTA work together to “deliver equitable transportation projects across Atlanta.”

“Both legacy and emerging communities have immediate transportation needs that deserve effective solutions,” Dickens said in a news release.

“It is imperative that our transportation investments are strategically and equitably deployed to increase ridership on MARTA’s heavy rail network and bus system fostering a more connected and unified Atlanta,” he said.

Atlanta City Councilmember Byron Amos, who represents District 3 and is a chair of the transportation committee, praised Dickens’ announcement to enhance the city’s transportation infrastructure.

“Among these stations, I am particularly ecstatic that the residents of District 3 will be benefiting from one, the proposed Joseph E. Boone station,” Amos said in a news release.

“This investment improves connectivity and fosters economic growth and community development,” he said. “Together, let’s continue prioritizing progress and accessibility for all citizens.”

Big ideas sought for former Bankhead Courts public housing

Cleared of public housing more than a decade ago, a property west of intown Atlanta with rich cultural significance but a troubled social track record is officially a blank slate for redevelopment, as of this week.

Atlanta Housing, which bills itself as one of the nation’s most forward-thinking housing authorities, issued an open challenge to city dwellers Monday to come up with viable concepts that will reshape the former Bankhead Courts site in Northwest Atlanta—and boost the community in the process.

Formerly home to rapper, singer, and songwriter Lil Nas X and other influential music artists, the former Bankhead Courts property is situated just Outside The Perimeter, north of the point where Donald Lee Hollowell Parkway (formerly Bankhead Highway) meets Interstate 285.

Today, the 35-acre site is entirely vacant, with just a portion of a former interior street, Maynard Court, still intact. Perks of the location, according to AH, include its adjacency to the Chattahoochee River (about .4 miles away) and access to an I-285 interchange about a half-mile in the other direction.

AH has released a Request for Ideas, or RFI, that invites not just developers but nonprofit organizations, philanthropic groups, and regular community members to share ideas—whether elaborate or basic—for what the important former public housing site should become.

Part of AH’s goals, as stated by newly appointed president and CEO Terri Lee, is to create or preserve 10,000 affordable housing units over the next five years. But all options for Bankhead Courts will be taken into consideration, per the agency.

“Whether you have a short thought or description, an image, or a big redevelopment strategy, we welcome your participation in reimagining Bankhead,” reads the RFI. “AH recognizes the value of the property for several possible usage types and [feels] everything is open and on the table for discussion.”

Between 1968 and 1970, Bankhead Courts was originally developed across 45 acres in four phases, with 65 buildings standing two and three stories on the property. Those townhome-style structures housed 500 units, most of them with three bedrooms. Problems over time included construction deficiencies, youth vandalism, sewer backups, and—as with most of Atlanta's public housing—poor maintenance. Following a problematic era fraught with drug sales and crime, Atlanta Housing was granted HUD authorization in the late 1990s and early 2000s to start bringing down buildings, and by 2011, the site was fully cleared.

Another attribute of the site today is its proximity to Atlanta Industrial Park and the Fulton Industrial District, which could provide a source of job opportunities and training, per AH officials.

Ideas collected over the next two months will help inform the second phase of redevelopment: a competitive Request for Proposals that AH will issue to developers and other commercial firms with a goal of “implementing a collective vision,” per the agency.

Donating a move-in kit makes a tremendous difference in these clients’ lives. Please consider contributing these items to set them up for success. You can even rally friends, neighbors, or colleagues and make it a mini-service project!

his is the first time a large-scale study of Atlanta’s nightlife economy has ever been conducted. Defining the contribution that businesses like yours make to the Atlanta economy and job base will help foster a much more constructive and sensible approach to managing the issues that impact your members. It will also provide the data to help your industry tell a compelling story about the role that nightlife plays in the city’s cultural, social, and economic life.

It takes no more than 10 minutes to respond to this survey. The better the response rate, the more compelling and useful this study will be in telling the important story of the contribution your businesses make. If you have any questions, please reach out to the Mayor’s Office of Film and Entertainment's - Nightlife Division (contacts available here).

Public Engagement for Trails ATL: A Citywide Trails Plan

I'm happy to share that the Dept. of Parks & Recreation is kicking off public engagement for a citywide trails plan! Check out the info on the Trails ATL website: https://www.trailsatl.com/

The intention of this trails plan is to help connect Atlantans to the places they want to go, especially parks and natural spaces, but also places like schools, grocery stores, and places of work, worship, and entertainment. Other key City partners include the Dept. of City Planning, Dept. of Transportation, Dept. of Watershed Management, and the Mayor's Office of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, among many other partners. The PATH Foundation is the plan's project manager. And, most importantly, we're seeking your partnership as Friends of the Park leaders not only to engage and provide input into the plan, but also to help spread the word and ensure we reach as many people as possible with the opportunity to have their voices heard!

Public engagement has already begun with pop-up activations at NPU meetings (please view the "Engage" tab on the website linked above). The first official public meeting is next week at Peachtree Hills Recreation Center on Monday, March 25 from 6 - 7:30 pm. Subsequent public meetings are listed below, and are also included on the website:

Community Initiatives: We are delighted to support community-driven initiatives aimed at enriching the lives of our residents:

ESL and GED Classes at Springfield Missionary Baptist Church: Since January 8th, 2023, Springfield Missionary Baptist Church has partnered with APS to offer ESL and GED classes on Mondays through Thursdays from 9am to 12pm. ESL classes are held on Mondays and Wednesdays, while GED classes take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

We encourage community members to spread the word and participate in these invaluable educational opportunities.

After-School and Summer Camp Programs: We are actively working on launching After-School and Summer Camp programs to provide enriching experiences for our youth. These programs will offer engaging activities and support for our community's children during the school year and summer months.

3.6.24 City Council Approved Bowen Homes Grant and More

The Atlanta City Council approved an ordinance authorizing the city to accept a $960,000 grant from the Housing Authority, awarded by the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, to administer the Bowen Choice Neighborhood Grant.

The grant will help the City of Atlanta revitalize the 74-acre Bowen Homes neighborhood, which has been abandoned for more than a decade. The property was once home to one of the city’s largest public housing projects and became notorious for crime.

The city plans to build 2,000 rental and ownership units in the previously abandoned area. Developers are also planning to construct a Community Resources Center and Innovation Hub that will offer Bowen Homes’ residents affordable commercial space and job-training opportunities.

Other items on the agenda include:

• An ordinance to execute an amendment of the Lighting Services Agreement between the Atlanta Department of Transportation and Georgia Power Company to add funding to install additional streetlights at critical locations and to upgrade additional streetlights to LED lighting as part of the City’s Light up the Night initiative.

• A resolution authorizing a project management agreement for the Atlanta Department of Transportation with the Westside/Howell Mill Community Improvement District for a sidewalk installation project on Chattahoochee Avenue for $1.9 million.

• A resolution establishing a Fire Station Design Committee to create a discussion between the Department of Enterprise Asset Management and the Atlanta Fire Rescue Department for fire station design and architectural phase recommendations.

• A resolution authorizing a $250,000 donation to FCS Urban Ministries to help implement the Thomasville Heights Neighborhood Plan and other initiatives.

Items were introduced for consideration in committee, including:

• A resolution authorizing a project management agreement with the PATH Foundation for the Silver Comet Connector in an amount not to exceed $500,000.

A resolution to create a commission to determine an appropriate way to honor former Mayor Shirley Franklin, the first woman to hold the office.

• A resolution authorizing a $3 million donation from the housing trust fund to Partners for Home (PFH) to support the provision of quick-delivery housing for the city’s unhoused residents in participation in the rapid housing initiative and to authorize PFH to utilize funds to cover the costs of any other housing construction.

• A resolution authorizing a $300,000 donation to the Atlanta Fire Rescue Foundation.

An ordinance to accept a Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act Dislocated Worker Program grant for $1.6 million.

On Thursday, February 8th and Friday, February 9th, the Northwest Business Association assisted four women owned businesses with preparing required documentation needed for City of Atlanta 2024 business license renewals.

This year, the city required businesses to provide an income statement for the previous year's gross receipts. See requirements here.

Board member, Derrick Green of Historic Hills Community Development Corporation and Community Development Consultant, Jennifer Ohme worked side by side to produce business income statements and ensure these small businesses renewed their license onsite to avoid penalty.
